I haven't read the book, but seeing the movie you can see both the appeal (to a certain crowd and the Academy) and the dislike that will built inside some viewers. This works as a fairytale (sort of) but has some fine acting to back that up. Jessica Chastain is the first name that springs to mind. A superb turn and very inspired. It feels like she is/was a star for a long time, when you see what a line-up she has/had for 2010-2012. And I don't see an end to that career anytime soon. Of course you also have to name the ever-wonderful Sissy Spacek. It's glorious how much fun she has with her role.
Of course all the other actresses (mostly female cast) are good too. The turn of Emma Stones mother (her characters mother that is) is played nicely, but there is a turn of character in the movie that just does not feel right. It does work for the movie, but just by an inch. And of course the overall role of Emma Stone could be questioned, but that would take a direction, that I do not want to take my comment on the movie.
So if you are up for a light drama, you will enjoy this very much. But bare in mind, it is not really perfect (Bryce Dallas Howards character has quite a few moments, where she doesn't "act" as the character should) Try not to think too much about it.
